New Police Training – Stop or I’ll Maim
Why doesn’t the Republican’s fury for “Right to Life” extend to young African-American men? The sick sport of killing nonthreatening black men has to stop!
My Proposals for New Police Officer Training –
1. Do not draw a gun for non-violent crimes.
2. Once the suspect has stopped, stop lethal interaction.
3. Put more black and Hispanic officers on the beat in black and Hispanic communities.
4. Prospective Police Officers should be tested for mental illness. Test for logical
thinking and problem solving.
5. Fear should NOT be instilled in Officers as part of the training.
6. Cops who kill unarmed people have to be charged with murder and stand trial.
7. Homeland Security should handle investigating murders perpetrated by Police Officers until this trend has stopped. Homeland Security should oversee jury and Judge selection, and the appointing of attorneys for the victim’s family.
The new Law Enforcement training should include how to handle nonviolent situations that require a traffic ticket or summons. You can’t just kill someone because they “look suspicious,” as in the Travon Martin case. Tip: if you feel threatened, don’t get out of your car – just leave.
I was told about this impending “Civil War” in 2003 in ‘The CONVERSATION”
and again in 2011. These horrendous street-side executions were planned because the
powers that be, the right-wing, home-grown terrorists, enjoy watching African-Americans burn and loot their own neighborhoods. From now on, any town with right-wing, home-grown terrorists on the police force and in the town’s government and have enough members to add several to a jury (grand or otherwise) will continue to see these tragedies play out.
I applaud President Obama for a call to action in derailing what is clearly trending.
Shooting someone for jaywalking or for selling cigarettes without the package is just plain absurd. Cops on the beat should know most of the people under their protection. They should interact with the neighborhood they patrol. If a patrol car is stopped in one particular area for a long period of time the officer should be out walking the beat and meeting people. Introducing him or herself and establishing a rapport with the people he has been sworn to protect and defend. There’s entir ely too much fear in the police department and I believe that fear is taught alongside lethal control.
What I would like to do is offer some alternatives. Law enforcement is talking about setting up new rules, with no insight into what the new training would be. Right now it’s just a knee-jerk reaction to the recent murders. They feel they have to say something – I’m thankful for Pres. Obama’s insight into this horrific situation and his call to action. I thought marches would take place after Amadou Diallo was murdered by police in New York City in February 1999. I remember when Bruce Springsteen wrote and performed the song American Skin (41 Shots) he got criticism for being too political. HOW IS THAT POLITICAL? It’s been fifteen years and unarmed black men are still being gunned down, like it’s a sport encouraged and condoned by the Republican Party and Fox. Why is shooting forty-one shots at an unarmed black man a political subject?
World Peace starts at home. Stopping violence of any kind should be the priority of all political parties everywhere. If you speak out against shooting someone so many times that six of the bullets went through the bottoms of his feet, I think that’s a good thing. It’s a tiny baby step toward world peace. If you’re a Republican reading this, ask yourself why you want police to be able to kill black men for minor infractions that should have ended with them getting a ticket.
Rethink when deadly force is necessary. Why is it necessary to use deadly force at all, to catch someone who’s jaywalking or selling looseys? If those two men had gotten away without a ticket, what difference would it have made in the scheme of things?
Once a gun is brandished then it’s up to the Officer to stop himself from killing the suspect. I realize you do have a better chance of hitting something if you shoot at the heart, but, once the suspect is down or has his hands raised and is standing still, all shooting has to stop. Period. Call for backup and handcuff the suspect.
